I'm grateful for those who do good this time of year.
Whether that is through delivering toys to Toys for Tots or for an angel on an angel tree; giving food to an organization like Shepherd's Storehouse, HOPE Food and Clothing Ministry or Lovepacs Aubrey; or donating to an organization that helps make the season bright.
One of my friends shared a sweet way that her kindergartener is learning to think of others on social media with the help of her family's Elf on the Shelf, Nellie.
Nellie wrote, 'Santa says you must fill this basket with old toys! You must trade in for new ones! I'll make sure they find a new home!'
In response, her daughter filled the laundry basket to overflowing and then some.
Those presents made their way to HOPE, which will help them find new life with other kids who will love them.
That's such a sweet way to teach the value of giving.
Another friend posted about how, after a difficult year, she will be giving fewer material gifts to her kids, who have all been understanding about why. She made the point that we typically love the presents that have meaning, especially of sharing memories together while either going to an event or participating in an activity. Two of my favorite presents— one from my sister of tickets to a concert and one from my best friend of an oil-painting set—are my favorites because of the memories formed by using them together.
I'm not saying don't give material gifts if you can. If you're able, too, get those from some of our amazing local businesses (the ones in the downtown areas of Pilot Point, Aubrey and Tioga come to mind).
But I'm going to try to remember this year how valuable it is to give something that will turn into a memory or a happy reminder of the love I have for those I give presents to, not just an item to check a name off a list.
