Soccer season is right around the corner, and the Aubrey Lady Chaparrals are one step closer to being ready after scrimmaging the Lake Dallas Lady Eagles on Nov. 13.

The two squads battled each other and the elements on a windy and wet night for two 40-minute halves, with the Lady Chaps pulling out the lastminute win 2-1.

“We tied it up in the second half, and they rallied around each other and came back to win the game in the last seven minutes,” head girls soccer coach Kelli Baker said. “Their effort showed in the fact that they didn’t want to quit, and they didn’t get down on themselves. There was no arguing; there was no complaining. Everyone just looked at each other and was like, ‘Okay, if everyone does their job, we'll win.”

Aubrey’s first score of the game was set up by a corner kick from senior Macy Childers and was finished off by junior Brynnlee Lady Chaps a 1-0 midway through the first half.

The Lady Chaps’ defense stood strong the remainder of the way, keeping the Lady Eagles off of the scoreboard and sending the teams into the halftime break with Aubrey holding onto a 1-point lead.

The second period was just as hotly contested until one of Lake Dallas’ forwards was able to squeak a ball past Aubrey’s goalie, tying the game at 1 midway through the second half.

Aubrey retook the lead with about seven minutes left in the game when Bohannon broke through the Lady Eagles defense and sunk the ball into the net, breaking the tie.

The Lady Chaps were able to put the clamps on their opponents for the remainder of the game, winning their first scrimmage of the season 2-1.

Baker cited the training the 18-member team did during the summer for how quickly they’ve adjusted in his first year on the sidelines at Aubrey.

“We’re allotted a couple of hours a week to work with our players while they’re on break and helped build my relationship with them before we started school,” he said. “It’s been a really easy transition. They’ve accepted my philosophy and work hard. … That says a lot about the community here in Aubrey that they're super accepting of me and that they are willing to change and adapt to a new coach.”

Baker also added the Lady Chaps will continue to work on aspects of their game when they roll into their second and final scrimmage against the Wichita Falls Lady Mavericks at home on Friday.

“The scrimmages are for me and the girls to get experience,” he said. “I tell them every day, ‘We're going to try things, and if it doesn't work, we'll fix it, and we'll try it again until we figure it out,’ [but] helps me see where they play, make adjustments on the fly and then we can go into Christmas break practices with a plan to be successful in our first couple of tournaments at the beginning of January.”

Aubrey and Wichita Falls will get things underway at 3 p.m. Friday at Chaparral Memorial Stadium.
