Let’s be clear here
Aaron Rocha argued on Facebook on Dec. 15 that no prior mayor was abused or had their authority questioned.
He also claimed the other six council members are racists who strip the mayor of her rights, silencing her voice through a relentless, orchestrated campaign using the help of blind, ignorant followers.
Attending approximately 75% of council meetings over the past three years, I witnessed Mayor Shea Dane-Patterson pause a meeting, leaving the dais in tears, after announcing she would not seek reelection due to constant abuse, name calling and claims that she was ineffective.
The mayor's role is ceremonial and procedural.
It has no other authority granted by the Charter.
Mayors represent us, with the council's approval, at various functions, and run the council meetings.
Mayors do not run the city under our form of government. That's the city manager's job.
I’ve never witnessed the supposed racism.
Aaron, weren't you appointed to the council as a Hispanic man?
Are you forgetting that Elizabeth Jones is Hispanic or that Andrew Ambrosio is married to a Hispanic woman?
Council recently appointed an African-American person to the Advisory Board, an African-American person to the MDD Board and a person of Middle Eastern descent to the P&Z Board.
Strange kind of racism. I don't want a bulldozer mayor who ignores the rules, calls council members names and is happy only when things go her way. I don't want that from anyone on the council.
My solution is all those blind, ignorant followers get more involved: attend meetings, speak with all the elected officials, the city manager or city staff, get pertinent documents from the city, or attend the Citizens Academy.
Don't take Aaron’s or my word for the truth!
Aaron, the next time you see me, please expect a hug. I try not to hold grudges.
However, you may have to identify yourself, as I may still be that blind, ignorant person you claim I am.
