The Aubrey Lady Chaps varsity soccer team took care of business, with a dominant 6-0 win over Sanger Tuesday night at Chaparral Memorial Stadium.
The Lady Chaps controlled the time of possession and kept the ball in Sanger territory en route to their fourth consecutive win.
“Having our tournament canceled last weekend set us back a little bit, but towards the second half we really hit our stride and started to find the back of the net,” head girls soccer coach Kelli Baker said. “We’ve really worked on shooting because that’s been our Achilles’ heel lately, and it’s really shown up in the past two outings with the girls taking the chances to shoot.”
Aubrey senior forward and co-captain Macy Childers got the night started for the Lady Chaps, scoring the game’s first goal on a penalty kick earned by freshman Daniella Dominic-Etul.
Aubrey junior and the team’s other captain, Brynnlee Bohannon, kept the momentum going when she scored on a breakaway a couple of minutes later, giving the Lady Chaps a 2-0 lead as the teams went into halftime.
Bohannon also led the Lady Chaps with 3 assists.
The Lady Chaps hit the ground running in the second half, with Childers finding Dominic-Etul for the team’s second breakaway goal, taking a 3-0 lead with 35 minutes remaining.
Childers added her second goal off of an assist from Bohannon, pushing Aubrey’s lead to 4-0.
Senior midfielder Alison Fleming closed things out for Aubrey with two more goals during the final 15 minutes of regulation, sealing the 6-0 victory.
“Our defense definitely played well,” Childers said. “Them winning the ball, getting it to the midfield, and then our forwards were able to make runs and create space for us to get the ball and put it in the net.”
Baker spoke highly of his group of upperclassmen— Childers, Fleming, Payton Johnson, Andrea Anez, Emma Gillum, Andrea Cavazos and Breelyn Corgrove— as they were honored on senior night.
“They've created a closeknit group,” he said. “We have five freshmen, a couple sophomores, a couple juniors and then our seven seniors. They have taken everybody else under their wing and said, ‘Hey, this is how we do it here at Aubrey,’ and they are where our leadership comes from.”
Fleming shared just how special it’s been being a founding member of the Lady Chaps soccer program.
“I started as a sophomore, and I’ve definitely seen the whole team grow,” she said. “Tonight is a little sad, but it’s also a happy moment. I’m [glad] I’ve been able to see it all happen, and I can’t wait to come back after I graduate and watch all my friends that are lowerclassmen keep playing.”
Baker said he hopes the win helps the Lady Chaps learn how to play their best no matter the opposition.
“We want them to take care of business against teams that we’re better than,” he said. “Stepping out, taking control of the game and not playing down to the other team’s level is something we’re really preaching. We have Braswell on Friday, so that will be another opportunity against a 6A school to see how well we can play against that level of competition.”
The Lady Chaps will conclude the non-district portion of their schedule in a matchup with the 0-3 Braswell Lady Tigers at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Carrico Stadium.
