Woman, 2 kids dead

A young mother and her two children were found dead in their car by the Denton County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 16 after being discovered during a welfare check by the Pilot Point ISD Police Department.

Though as of press time the Tarrant County Medical Examiner has not released any official findings, DCSO Assistant Chief Larry Kish commented on the ongoing investigation.

“One of the deceased was Kelsey Gregory,” Kish said. 'She’s 29 years old, and she had two children with her, a 3-month-old son and a 5-year-old son.”

The mother and children were found in the 2100 block of Twin Creek Circle in the unincorporated area of Pilot Point, and Kish said he believes this is an isolated incident.

“There is no immediate threat to the community or anyone in the neighborhood,” Kish said. “Without going into all the details, I can tell you what we’re looking at is a suicide type situation. We’re working it as a murder- suicide. There was no forced entry in the residence. It all happened within the residence. It was in the garage.”

Though PPPD Chief Brad Merrit declined to comment on the reason for the district’s welfare check in this instance, Human Resources Director Valerie Wall explained the general reasons a welfare check might be conducted.

“We have a protocol we follow for home visitation,” Wall said. “It could be anything from visits at the beginning of a school year to visiting new families on campuses to help them feel more like part of the community or engaging parents on the educational process of their child or having conversations regarding challenges their student is facing.”
