Chaps baseball downs Falcons at home

Aubrey pitcher Tyler Winten headed to the dugout with a giant grin on his face, catcher Diego Tagliaferro running up to congratulate him on March 28.

The Chaps were grinning ear to ear after pulling out a 5-4 victory over the Falcons in the seventh inning.

'I thought we played really well; we played as a team,' head coach Nate Henry said. 'We played for each other, and it's good to see that. As many young players as we've had, now they're starting to get the experience and gelling with the older guys.'

He added that Winten's pitching performance made a big difference in the win over Lake Dallas.

'Really, it was Tyler Winten on the mound,' Henry said. 'That's where it all started. He was phenomenal.'

The offense worked well together, too, putting the skills the team has worked on into action.

The bats got going in the bottom of the second, as Dane Buck scored after Cameron Sanders singled on a bunt, putting Aubrey up 1-0.

The next batter, Colton Billings laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought in 1 run and pushed The Chaps’ lead to 2.

Lake Dallas answered in the top of the third, scoring 2 runs on a single and tying the score at 2.

Aubrey battled back, reclaiming the lead 3-2 when courtesy runner Ethan Mc-Meen scored on a passed ball.

Lake Dallas came out swinging in the fourth, scoring 2 runs and retaking the lead 4-2.

The Chaps came back to tie the Falcons in the bottom of the fifth inning, after Mc-Meen made his way home again.

Tension mounted in the top of the sixth after two errors, but the Chaps were able to pick off the Falcon's Rivera as he attempted to steal second and Winten struck out the batter for the final out of the inning.

The Chaps retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Buck, who earned the walk to first, stole second, where McMeen came in for him as a courtesy runner.

Hellman, who laid down a sacrifice bunt at the pitcher, was thrown out on his way to first but allowed McMeen to move into scoring position.

On the next play, Sanders laid down another, giving McMeen the space he needed to slide home for the winning run.

The Chaps made quick work of the Falcons in the final inning, with the first batter grounding out to second and Winten striking out the final two.

The March 27 game was 'the best team-oriented game we've had probably all season,' Braeden Flak said.

'We came into this game knowing they're a good team, and to win this game, just got to keep high energy, play the ball we know how to play,' he said. '… I'm just really proud of how we played.'

He also said of Winten that 'it's hard to hit off Tyler.'

Winten was grateful for the support his teammates gave both on offense and defense.

'We had a few errors, but they played back and got it done,' he said.

When the team got into a tough spot defensively, Winten tapped into his confidence to keep pushing through.

'I've been doing it for a long time, so I trust myself to get it done and just keep throwing strikes,' he said.

The Chaps beat Lake Dallas again 6-3 on Saturday and defeated Panther Creek 3-1 Tuesday night.

Aubrey will look to keep its winning streak alive in a rematch with Panther Creek at 7 p.m. Friday.
