Jill Cannon has dropped out of the running for Providence Village Place 3.
Although Cannon emailed the town expressing her intent to drop out, her name will still appear on the ballot.
“Since the county had already per- formed the logic and accuracy testing, and the ballots had already been approved, there is nothing we can do on our end to remove her name,” Town Secretary Hilary McConnell said in an email.
Cannon was in a car wreck late in the week of March 31 and said she is prioritizing her recovery.
“As I heal, I will continue to volunteer for the town and work with our community,” Cannon said. “I appreciate the support from the community and want to say thank you to those who have volunteered up until now.”
Because her name will still be on the ballot however, it is still possible for her to win the election, though given her stated intentions she would then not accept, causing a vacancy.
“ I think people are assuming that, if she did get more votes than me, it would automatically defer to me, and that’s not what happens,” Place 3 incumbent Klayton Rutherford said. “If she did get more votes and did not accept the seat, it would go through the appointment process.”
He applauded Cannon for the race the two have run up to this point.
“We’ve run a substantive campaign,” Rutherford said. “Both Jill and I have acknowledged that we share a lot of the same values and have a similar vision for Providence Village, and I think that’s important for her supporters to hear.”
Cannon further endorsed current Rutherford.
“He and I have always agreed that our values are aligned and I look forward to what he can bring in the coming 3 years,” Cannon said.
